| | | Business Owners and Fleet OptionsThis is the section where the most hardened fleet manager will get excited. As mentioned before the running costs of an electric vehicle are a fraction of the cost when compared to the costs of running a fossil-fuelled vehicle. Even when you add-in the cost of a battery pack, the total cost of ownership is still substantially lower than the equivalent petrol powered vehicle. Costs aside worldwide concern about global warming and climate change is growing enormously. Businesses are taking steps to lower their carbon emissions, and Governments are now legislating to change business and consumer purchasing and behaviour. | | | | | | | | ATTENTION: BUSINESS OWNERS AND TRANSPORT FLEET OPERATORS
Are you trying to get back control of your vehicles operating costs? Are your maintenance costs piling up?
| | | | An electric van and light truck is powered by the most efficient electric motor with only one moving part. The service intervals of these extremely durable motors are measured in millions of kilometres.
The only wear and tear parts your electric van or truck will have are brake pads, tyres, suspension and differential.
On most conversions the brakes are used sparingly as the vehicle is slowed by regenerative braking. What this means is when you take your foot off the accelerator the motor acts as a generator under load slowing the vehicle which in turn puts power back into your battery bank. "Neat huh!"
The suspension components, well you would have a better idea of how often you have issues with them and the same applies to the diff, it does wear eventually. So you can see by owning an electric vehicle there is a huge payback with no fixed interval servicing costs to maintain warranty. Even when your petrol powered vehicle is outside of the warranty period, cash flow permitting good operators maintain regular services to help prevent costly repairs.
| | | | One of the really exciting parts of having electric vehicles in your business or fleet is that you can re-fuel at work or home and soon at EVE Re-Charge points while you are out and about. The cost to re-fuel using electricity is measured in 'cents' per charge; however a rough rule of thumb is that your new electric van or light truck will cost approximately 10 - 20% of what you are presently paying for petrol or diesel. The best operating scenario for an upgraded electric van or light truck is in a situation which involves a lot of short trips - with a return to base type operation.
Like the converted electric car a similar "single charge range" limitation, presently applies to the converted or upgraded light truck or van. Depending upon the battery pack used the single charge range will be 40 - 100 kms real world. However this range is extended if the vehicle can be plugged into a regular 10A or 15A power point for short periods of time to top up the battery pack. Overseas some operators have placed powerful fast charging units in their depots in order to rapidly re-charge the battery pack to gain a much greater daily operating range from their electric vehicle fleet. For a lot of small vans and light trucks there is a lot of stop start driving, some times operating in heavy traffic doing short trips mostly during the day. There is absolutely no reason why vans operating in this scenario should not be electric. As the battery cost continues to improve over the next few years there is a strong argument and reason as to why all vans and light trucks operating under this scenario should be electric. So take some time today and see about getting at least one of your vehicles upgraded to all electric. It's an exciting time...be part of it!
| | | On a final note there are many businesses and companies that are making a stand and leading the way, playing their part in the push to reduce the green house gas emissions from commercial vehicles. These companies and businesses will base part of the value of the cost of conversion to some of their fleet to electric on a moral basis rather than purely economic.

| | Government Incentives | |
| At present you can claim the increased depreciation schedule for new cars purchased before the end of the year. We are hopeful that the government will provide some extra incentives for businesses to facilitate their adoption of electric vehicles into their business. We remain ever hopeful; however the economic decision of transitioning to electric vehicles for some of your fleet right now is very compelling without any government assistance. Before making any decison please discuss with your tax advisor. |
